Computing museum looks for backers in fight for Cambridge existence

A museum tracing the history of computing is fighting to raise enough initial funds to make the move into Cambridge that would release further donations and secure its future.

The Centre for Computing History has already raised over £20,000 with Red Gate Softwareand Arm Holdings providing £10k each. However, several other potential funders have said their money is conditional on the museum securing an appropriate site for its intended switch from Haverhill.

Sophie Wilson will be at the next meeting of ROUGOL

0

According to bbcmicro.com, Sophie Wilson will be at the next meeting of RISC OS User Group Of London on the 19th April 2010.

From Bryan Hogan:

For ROUGOL’s April meeting we are very excited to have Sophie Wilson as our guest speaker.

Sophie was with Acorn throughout their history as chief technical designer. Just some of her many significant projects included:

Designer of the Acorn System 1 (PCB, software, manuals, and putting them in boxes!)
Co-designer of the BBC Micro, including the Tube 2nd processor system
Author of BBC BASIC, both the original and ARM versions (and all the earlier Acorn BASICs)
Designer of the ARM processor instruction set
Leader of the Arthur project, and part of its development into RISC OS, including design of the anti-aliased font system
Author of Replay, the advanced (for its time) video playback system
After the break up of Acorn, Sophie moved to Element-14 which was later bought by Broadcom, where she has continued to work on ARM based designs.

Sophie’s talk will mostly focus on the development of the ARM processor, from its early days through to post Acorn developments such as FirePath.

As Sophie gives very few interviews this is a rare opportunity to hear the details direct from the source.

The usual arrangements

The Blue-Eyed Maid
(upstairs in the Spice Lounge restaurant)
173 Borough High Street
London
SE1 1HR

Admittance is free and everyone is welcome. A range of hot and cold food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, will be on sale.

Anyone with wireless enabled handhelds or laptops can access the internet during the meeting, or (if time allows) use ROUGOL’s RiscPC to do so after the main presentation has finished.

The venue is between London Bridge and Borough tube stations, so readily accessible by public transport (both stations are a five minute walk away, through well lit and CCTV’d main streets). It also has ample cycle parking (covered by CCTV) very close by.

If you are arriving by car, the Congestion Charge ends at 6pm and our meeting starts much later. However, please note that parking on double red lines is restricted at all times. On single red or yellow lines, it is best to park after 7pm. If you aren’t completely familiar with *central* London parking or driving, please allow extra time,
patience, and maps.

If you need any help reaching the venue, or any other information, please contact us as below.
